The Naval Coordination Mechanism is a Spanish initiative, which primarily considers the complexity to harmonize the national interest in the maritime domain, and the necessary to provide a specialist forum previous the politico military decision making at the level of the 5+5 Defence Initiative.
Considering the existing complexity to harmonize the national interest in the maritime domain, it is necessary to provide a specialist forum previous the politico military decision making level of the initiative.
The Naval Working Group will advise the Steering Committee on specific Naval issues, collect the National Naval Staff’s views on specific 5+5 naval activities and to produce a consolidated Naval Action Plan, for the subsequent review and approval by the SC.
The NWG could also initiate studies about issues of own competence in order to improve the interoperability amongst members and to optimize the exercise program.
Additionally the NWG will prepare the Agenda of the Meeting of the Chief of Navies.
In summary the aim of this coordination mechanism is to rationalize and integrate the individual member states proposals of de maritime activities, promoting interoperability among navies and the efficiency of means.
On June 13, was celebrated in Madrid the experimental meeting of the Naval Working Group proposed by Spain.The issues discussed at the meeting were:
- review draft Action Plan 2014;
- design a draft consolidated calendar for 2014;
- debate about Maritime Security Exercise, Italy proposed celebrate it annually;
- discussion on the database of lessons learned and training objectives;
- reference terms of the Working Group of Naval Coordination.
After this meeting, Spain submitted t the Nations a questionnaire related to the issues described above.
Our next goal is to present the results of the questionnaire in the next steering committee in Lisbon.

The Naval Working Group Meeting
