Created at the end of 2009 by Tunisia, it is currently at an advanced stage, having performed the first investigation in 2010. Annually a research project is defined by the countries. For the year 2013 a research project was developed with the participation of researchers from all countries under the theme "What are the Strategies of Cooperation within the 5+5 Defence Initiative to address the challenges and threats in the Sahel?”. The result of this research will be presented to the Ministers of Defense of the Member States at the ministerial meeting that will take place in December in Guimarães, Portugal.
